An IP44 Socket Waterproof Protective Box is installed to protect electrical connections from rain, dust, and accidental contact. But the box itself is also exposed to the environment. In a sunny location, the box may be subjected to 1,500 hours of direct sunlight per year. The surface temperature can reach 70°C in summer and drop to -10°C in winter. Over five years, the material experiences 1,800 thermal cycles. If the material is not formulated to resist this aging, it will become brittle, crack, and lose its IP44 rating. The protection fails not because of a design flaw, but because the material degraded. This guide explains the aging mechanisms and how to specify a box that will last.
Aging is the irreversible change in the material properties caused by exposure to the environment. There are three primary aging mechanisms for a protective box: ultraviolet radiation, thermal oxidation, and chemical attack. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight breaks the polymer chains in the plastic. This causes the surface to become dull, then chalky, and eventually brittle. Thermal oxidation occurs when the material is exposed to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen. It causes the material to lose elasticity and crack. Chemical attack occurs when the box is exposed to pollutants, acid rain, or cleaning chemicals. These substances can penetrate the surface and accelerate the degradation. The table below summarizes the aging mechanisms and their visible effects.
| Aging mechanism | Primary cause | Visible effect | Time to visible effect |
| UV degradation | Sunlight (290 – 400 nm) | Chalking, color fading, brittleness | 6 – 18 months |
| Thermal oxidation | Heat + oxygen | Cracking, loss of impact strength | 12 – 36 months |
| Chemical attack | Acid rain, pollutants, cleaners | Surface erosion, discoloration | 6 – 24 months |
| Hydrolysis | Moisture + heat | Loss of tensile strength | 24 – 48 months |
In our factory, we have analyzed returned boxes from outdoor installations. The boxes that failed within two years all showed severe chalking and surface cracking on the sun-facing side. The boxes that lasted more than five years were made from material with a UV stabilizer package. Ningbo Yuwei Science and Technology Co., Ltd. manufactures IP44 Socket Waterproof Protective Box units with an anti-aging formulation that resists these mechanisms.
Standard plastic for a protective box is typically polypropylene or ABS. These materials have good mechanical properties and are easy to mold. However, they are not formulated to resist long-term UV exposure. Without stabilizers, polypropylene will begin to chalk within 6 to 12 months of outdoor exposure. The anti-aging material used in our IP44 Socket Waterproof Protective Box contains three additives: a UV absorber, a hindered amine light stabilizer, and an antioxidant. The UV absorber captures the ultraviolet photons and dissipates them as heat before they can break the polymer chains. The hindered amine light stabilizer traps the free radicals that form during degradation, preventing chain reactions. The antioxidant prevents thermal oxidation during processing and in service. The table below compares the performance of standard and anti-aging materials.
| Performance parameter | Standard PP/ABS | Anti-aging material (our formulation) |
| UV stabilization | None or minimal | UV absorber + HALS |
| Accelerated weathering (1000 hours) | Severe chalking, 50% impact loss | No chalking, < 10% impact loss |
| Thermal aging (1000 hours at 80°C) | Cracking, 60% tensile loss | No cracking, < 15% tensile loss |
| Expected outdoor life | 1 – 3 years | 8 – 12 years |
| Color retention | Fades within 12 months | Stable for 5+ years |
The accelerated weathering test is performed in a QUV chamber according to ASTM G154. The test simulates the effect of sunlight and rain cycles. Our anti-aging material retains 90 percent of its impact strength after 1,000 hours of QUV exposure. A standard material loses 50 percent of its impact strength in the same period.
The IP44 rating is a measure of the box's ability to resist the ingress of solid objects larger than 1 mm and water splashing from any direction. The rating is maintained by the gasket, the sealing surfaces, and the integrity of the enclosure. If the material ages and the enclosure warps or cracks, the gasket no longer compresses properly, and the IP44 rating is lost. The table below shows the effect of aging on the IP44 performance of standard and anti-aging boxes.
| Exposure time (outdoor) | Standard box IP44 performance | Anti-aging box IP44 performance |
| New | Compliant | Compliant |
| 1 year | Compliant (slight gasket compression) | Compliant |
| 2 years | Marginal (water ingress at corners) | Compliant |
| 3 years | Non-compliant (visible cracks) | Compliant |
| 5 years | Failed (water ingress, corrosion) | Compliant (minor gasket wear) |
Ningbo Yuwei Science and Technology Co., Ltd. tests the IP44 performance of our IP44 Socket Waterproof Protective Box units after accelerated aging. The boxes are subjected to 1,000 hours of QUV exposure and then tested according to IEC 60529. The anti-aging boxes maintain the IP44 rating, while standard boxes fail. We also use a silicone gasket that resists compression set, which ensures that the seal remains effective even after years of thermal cycling.
Installers and procurement officers can verify the material quality with three simple checks. The first is to ask for the material data sheet. The data sheet should list the UV stabilizer package and the accelerated weathering test results. If the supplier cannot provide this data, the material is likely not formulated for outdoor use. The second is to perform a bend test. Bend a sample of the box material by 180 degrees. A high-quality anti-aging material will not whiten or crack at the bend. A standard material will show stress whitening. The third is to check the surface finish. A smooth, glossy surface is easier to clean and resists dirt accumulation. A rough surface can trap moisture and accelerate degradation. In our factory, we provide a material certificate and a QUV test report with every batch of IP44 Socket Waterproof Protective Box units.
The anti-aging material is critical for an IP44 Socket Waterproof Protective Box because it determines whether the box will maintain its IP44 rating after years of outdoor exposure. Standard plastics chalk, crack, and lose their impact strength within 2 to 3 years. An anti-aging formulation with UV absorbers, HALS, and antioxidants extends the life to 8 to 12 years. When specifying a protective box for outdoor use, always request the material data sheet and the accelerated weathering test report. A small increase in the initial cost is offset by the reduced replacement labor and the consistent protection of the electrical connections.
